FALL MAKE AGENDA

I've been in a bit of a funk for the last month. After taking a few weeks off from sewing to enjoy the last warm rays of fleeting summer sun, I'm having a hard time motivating myself to start working on the ideas I have for the fall.

I knew I needed a kick in the ass so last week I went fabric shopping to gather supplies for my next round of projects. I am calling Autumn 2012 The Season of Separates. Cleaning out my closet last week made it abundently clear that while I could sleep on a 12 foot high pile of dresses, I have very little in the way of practical tops, pants and skirts. I'm a working girl (NOT THAT KIND,  jeez you guys, get your minds out of the gutter) and I am in dire need of easy, breezy things I can mix and match (or throw on in the brain dead fugue state I inhabit the hour after crawling out of bed).

So let's do this thing.

cape, vogue 8776, cape pattern

First up on the docket... Perhaps my most ambitious make yet. I wanted to challenge myself with outerwear, so I am making an animal print cape using Vogue 8776. I looked high and low for a believable fake fur but everything I found was cheap and costumey. I ended up stumbling on a tiny, abstract print upholstery with a very short pile. It's got enough drape to work (I hope!) and since animal prints are practically a neutral I think it will work with everything I've got in my closet. I'm lining it with a heavy emerald satin, adding welt pockets in a cotton sateen and perhaps using a fine wool knit as a warm interlayer. I think I may be dragging my feet a little because I know this project is going to be a challenge but I'm forcing myself to get started this weekend. Knowing Montreal weather, I may only get to wear it for another month or so before it's parka time.

vogue 1247, rachel comey skirt
Next up is the Rachel Comey mini skirt from Vogue 1247. I made this last winter for my sister, and I loved the shape. I have a TO DIE FOR metallic brocade I bought in New York that will be perfect. It softened quite a bit when I washed it so I may get fancy ass and interline with silk organiza for additional structure. I can't wait to wear this with thick tights, boots and my black cashmere turtleneck.

by hand london, wiggle skirt, pencil skirt, peplum
Here is a project I am super excited for.... the gorgeous and original and ambitious ladies at By Hand London are releasing two AWESOME patterns this fall. I literally squealed and fanned my face when I saw this skirt. I have a super cozy B&W houndstooth that needs to be made into the sex on a sexy sex stick that is this skirt. Check out their teaser images here. Now all I need is a flight to London so Elisalex, Charlotte and I can wiggle all over town in them....

equipment blouse, mccalls 6436
On to some basics. I have pined for this white silk Equipment blouse for years. PINING BE GONE. It's time to make this lady mine. LITERALLY. McCalls 6436 is a dead ringer and I have a lovely white crepe de chine that wants to be all over my upper body. Take that $300 blouse! HA HA HA! Retail - NEVER AGAIN.

peplum top
I would like to use up the rest of my B&W striped jersey from my maxi dress to knock off this adorable peplum top.  May use this tutorial from Scared Stitchless.

Additionally I would like to knock out a few t-shirts. I have some patterns I'm going to try out but I would also like to use Sunni's rub-off method and recreate one of my favourites. I picked up some buttery soft black & white jersey for just this purpose.

vogue 8774, jeans pattern

Shit just got real. I'm making me some jeans. Please ignore the fugtastic styling of the above Vogue 8774 - please imagine instead perfectly fitted indigo skinnies that I will wear so much people will worry about my hygiene. Imagine also me internet stalking Sallie of the Most Perfect Handmande Jeans and Carolyn of the Jeans Made by Actual Angels to tell me all of their secrets. Also their tips on how to make fantastic jeans.

If all goes well on the jeans front I would love to remind my boss that I am a professional who has actual pants instead of the neon skinny jeans I've been wearing to work all summer. Look at these beauts! I love a a high waisted wide leg, lemme tell you. For these I am thinking of splurging on some Mood wool crepe in a fun colour. Or I may chicken out and do black. But still! Professional pants!

mccalls 6611, jacket pattern
Aye yai yai.... please do not let the woefully unfortunate colour blocking of this picture to distract you from what is (beneath all that horrific blue satin) a really dope jacket pattern. Looks super easy and in the right (to be determined) fabric will be a great work basic.

dolman sleeve, vogue knitting, angora wool
I am still not 100% sure but I think this is the sweater I am going to work on this winter. It looks so freaking cozy. A dolman sleeved angora sweater in off white will take your Seasonal Affective Disorder and swaddle it in a yarn hug.

On top of all this I would like to get around to sewing some new undies (I've been putting off buying new ones for just this reason and the situation is borderline embarassing) and perhaps a bra or two. All of the lingerie obsessed sewists in my blog roll are making me want to change my life.

Lastly, I'm cooking up a super fun little bonus project with one of our blog budz that I am super excited about (details to come!) And look what just happened.... all of this listing and planning has made me geeked and anxious to get started. I just have to stop watching Honey Boo Boo and get back to work.

  2. Love the high waisted pants! I would make them in emerald!

Also, love the wardrobe planning. Do you have a colour scheme as well?

  3. What a great list of clothes!! I made the Vogue cape earlier this year. It was not terribly hard. I also made the Rachel Comey skirt and the top. They are both great. The peplum skirt and striped knit top look amazing too.

  4. This list is so full of greatness, and comedic LOLZ, I can hardly stand it!!

We have many list items in common: Jacket (Colette Anise and maybe Sewaholic's Cambie), a drapey blouse (I planned a small size version of Negroni from Colette), peplum top, pants and a sweater.

We will achieve our respective goals??? I will stay tuned.

  5. Thank you! And I have complete and utter faith that we will meet 70% of our goals, as we get distracted by spur of the minute frosting projects. I would love to see your version of the Anise. I like Colette patterns but they can be too much on the sweet side for me sometimes... You would do something really cool, I have no doubt.

  6. Thanks Beth! The cape seemed simple enough but it was a little light on the details - it didn't even call for a lining! I thought that was weird.

  7. Nadia, you are a mad genius. EMERALD ALL THE WAY. Kelly green used to be my "colour" but I am totally feeling a deeper shade. Gonna take this suggestion and run with it.

  8. Also, no scheme per se. I'm trying to bust my stash a bit and make some solid every day basics. A lot of black and white now that I think about it...

  9. Holy guackers Heather what a list!!! I may just have to snaffle that silk shirt plan... How hot will that be with the wiggle skirt?? THANK YOU for mentioning us too - getting a little overwhelmed by all the love! But seriously, your Separates plan is hitting the nail on the head - I always thought of myself as a dresses girl and as a result I have an odd, mismatchable collection of tops/skirt/pants. And nothing to wear in the colder months (which happen to be my favourite...) A "Season of Separates" sewing pledge perhaps...? x

  10. Sassy T looking forward to seeing them. Now don't go changing ya mind lol http://threadnoir.blogspot.co.uk/

  11. Holy crap - so many good things here! And also - please get out of my head, because this list looks remarkably like my own Autumn sewing list!! I'm also thinking of making myself a cape since I donated all my outerwear in a "Fuck Winter! I live in the SOUTH!" fit last year and now don't know what to do with myself when it creeps down into the 40's. Also - I'm pretty sure I could live in Equipment blouses if, ya know, I was independently wealthy... So silk blouse and McCall's pattern... hiya!! Having to still my heart over that By Hand London skirt too - wowza's!

  12. I think "guackers" is my new favourite word. Thanks for the pledge idea. Should I do it? I've never really done anything like that to get people involved in a larger plan but it's a terrific idea.

  13. I'm pretty excited about this plan. I think I had to just focus my energy in order to not feel overwhelmed by what I had to accomplish.... But yes, make this blouse with me! I think it's gonna be a good recreation of RTW. And Sallie in a cape is the best idea anyone ever had.

  14. Haha yeah guackers is a great one! I think a sewing pledge would be great!! I'd definitely be on board and I'm sure loads of others would be too - more of that "less frosting more cake" theory x

  15. This list is CHOCK full of goodness! I have a few that I'm working on too (that 1st cape is at the top of my list also! One in wool and one in denim (gonna wash the heck out of it to make it soft)...I'll be following to check your progress (and maybe get a few kicks in the behind to make sure mine gets done! :)

  17. I've just finished my third Vogue 1247 skirt. Best skirt EVER. I made the top too this time.
I've also just bought that McCalls jacket pattern. I'm not sure what colour to make it in... but it sure as heck won't be like the envelope!

  18. Oh please make the houndstooth skirt using By Hand London's pattern! It would pair so well with tights and boots but would also transition into spring!

  19. Whoa, you have some seriously fabulous planning going on here. Loooove the peplum top. I've been pining for an Equipment blouse as well. Can't wait to see yours!

  20. The houndstooth skirt sounds killer. These are all great picks. I love the dolman sweater--yes! Red wide-legs: yes! (Must be red!) I made an Equipment-style blouse a couple of years ago and I wear it all the time... definitely something that will cross seasons and goes up or down. But I hope you get out of the sewing funk--I think some of it is just the end of the summer doldrums... and if you ever get to the bra part, feel free to give me a shout if you need some help with the fitting or sewing...

  21. I snapped out of it. I just had to actually start sewing again, plus I was super intimidated by learning how to do welt pockets and bound buttonholes (turns out, no big whoop). I will definitely be contacting you when I get around to bras. Your underwear is my favourite (sounds creepier than I intended).

  22. Should I do a asew-along? Seems like the kinda thing peeps would be into.

  23. i love your wording - sexy sex stick skirt, really dope jacket, jeans made by actual angels. i think you should get a job writing pattern design descriptions for pattern companies. you'd make everything sound bad-ass. ;)

  24. Thank you! But I probably swear way too much to make this dream a reality.
